The spring of urban planning has blossomed in Bologna, and not only in a metaphorical sense: TEK has received the green light (whose letters are the initials of the English words “Technology”, “Entertainment” and “Knowledge”), the new digital innovation district.

It constitutes an area of approximately 277 hectares along the axis of via Stalingrado, between Porta Mascarella and Dozza, in the capital city of Emilia-Romagna.

Some of the main economic players in Italy are present here, such as Fiera, Hera and Unipol, as well as important territorial players such as Legacoop, Confcooperative, CNA, Unioncamere.

The offices of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Tecnopolo are also located in this same area, which already houses the ECMWF, the European Meteorological Centre, the Leonardo supercomputer, the fourth most powerful in the world.

They will consequently be joined by the INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), CINECA, ENEA, the IOR (Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute), the National Research Center in HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing, the University of United Nations dedicated to Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for the management of Human Habitat Change and the Knowledge Workshops, the new citizen science office created by the Municipality of Bologna with PON Metro funds.

In the same area there are also some of the most important abandoned areas of the city, such as the former Caserma Sani and the Officine Casaralta and many other abandoned or underused production areas.

Over 210 hectares of potential areas to be redeveloped, a record from the post-war period to today

Over 210 hectares of potential areas to be redeveloped represent the most important urban regeneration project in Bologna since the post-war period.

More than 1 billion in public investments have already converged on this area (for the construction of the Tecnopolo, red tram line, Metrobus, Via della scienza and the DLF park) and potential private investments of the same size are estimated.

Alongside the Tecnopolo, the driving force behind the regeneration of this strategic national and European area will be the Fair, with a new master plan which envisages the strengthening of the more urban front of the exhibition district and the creation of a new entertainment and culture hub.

New entrance to Constitution Square, which will host the multipurpose pavilion

We will start from the new entrance in Piazza della Constitution, which will host the new multifunctional pavilion, a sports arena, commercial, cultural and recreational spaces, designed by Mario Cucinella's MCA studio.

In the northernmost areas, right in front of the Tecnopolo, a new Digital Innovation Village, which will welcome new businesses, research centers and residences.

An integral part of the master plan is also the redevelopment of the North Park, which will return to the city more than 50 hectares of urban park and a renovated Joe Strummer Arena with 25 thousand seats.

Hera's first Energy Park will also take shape near the North Park, an ambitious and innovative industrial project that brings together investments in renewable energy, protection of biodiversity and Climate Mission 2030.

The backbone of Via Stalingrado transformed into a European green boulevard

The redevelopment plan for the area also includes the progressive transformation of via Stalingrado, the true backbone of the TEK District, into a European green boulevard, for which a first pre-feasibility study carried out for the Municipality of Bologna by Arup is presented.

Among other things, it aims to reduce the emissions produced by mobility by 40 percent, the ground temperature by 10 degrees in the summer period and create more than 6.000 square meters of new green and permeable spaces.

In order to guarantee coordinated development of the many planned or potential interventions, the Municipality of Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna Region have set up a joint working group coordinated by the Regional Councilor for Economic Development Vincenzo Colla and the Municipal Councilor for Urban Planning, Raffaele Laudani.

More recently, a working table was also established with the Ministry of University and Research.
