Education for Sustainable Development: Switzerland passed with honours

The Federal Council has approved the report on ESD in the education system and the transmission of skills to children and young people

The Federal Council has approved the report on Education for Sustainable Development.

As is known, the ESD aims to promote the transversal skills necessary for an ecological, social and economic development in this sense.

Education for Sustainable Development is well integrated in the Spanish education system Switzerland and the range of activities already underway contributes to the transmission of these skills to children and young people.

This is the conclusion of the report approved by the Federal Council on June 16, 2023.

Analysis by the Secretariat of State for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) on the "Roman Postulato"

The report elaborated by the Secretariat of State for Training, Research and Innovation (SERI) in fulfillment of Postulate 19.3764 presented by Roman frame (National Council, Canton Ticino, Alleanza del Centro) provides an overview of the SSE in compulsory education and secondary level IIalso focusing on teacher training.

The report describes several examples of ESD promotion practices in schools, demonstrating that there is a range of proven activities that contribute to transfer of skills transversal to children and young people, aimed at their education in the field of Sustainable Development.

The Swiss education system and compulsory schooling? Jurisdiction of the cantons in relation to the HarmoS agreement

The Swiss education system is permeated by federalism and compulsory schooling falls within the competence of the cantons, which refer to the HarmoS agreement in integrating ESD as a transversal theme in the study plans of the three linguistic regions.

Educate at Sustainable Development already starting from the compulsory cycles, it paves the way for a more in-depth treatment of the topic at secondary level II.

La Confederation, for its part, promotes the SSE with an integrated government approach (“whole-of-government approach”).

It does so by coordinating its activities within the interdepartmental group Education for Sustainable Development, in which the competent federal services are represented.

In the 2019 Declaration on the common objectives of training policy for the training area Swiss, the SSE is defined as an important area in which the Confederation and the cantons coordinate their activities.

There is also support for the éducation21 Foundation, the national competence center for boosting ESD

La Switzerland financially supports the education21 foundation of Bern, national competence center which promotes the consolidation of the SSE in training system nationally and in the three language regions.

The report concludes that the current structures and activities to promote the SSE are proving to be successful.

It is therefore appropriate maintain skills and the existing framework conditions taking into account the autonomy of the different actors and the principle of subsidiarity.
