The Macolin Sports Center will… heat up with geothermal energy

An exploration of the subsoil should locate a source of hot water which is presumed to be around 1.300 meters deep in the canton of Bern

In Switzerland, the Federal Office for Construction and Logistics is planning the construction of a geothermal plant for the heat supply of the National Sortivo Center of Macolin (abbreviated as CSM), in the Canton of Bern.
The exploration of the subsoil should make it possible to identify a source of hot water which is presumed to be about 1300 meters deep.
This autumn, the FOBL will therefore carry out the necessary measurements in 13 municipalities located in the surrounding areas of Evilard/Macolin. And the geological prospecting will last three to four weeks.

In 2021 prospecting in Basel-City and Countryside, Geneva, Vaud and Valais

Underground exploration is part of virtually every geothermal project.
In other words, an x-ray of the area is performed to better understand the geological structure of the subsoil.
Special trucks equipped with plates spread vibrations at numerous soil measuring points, thus generating waves.
These waves pass through the various layers of rock underground and are then reflected at the surface. Measuring devices detect and record them.
The collected data allow to obtain an accurate representation of the subsoil. In the past year, such explorations were successfully carried out, for example, in the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Country, Geneva, Vaud and Valais.

Thousands of measuring points and devices around Lake Biel

This is the first time that prospecting of this type will be carried out for a geothermal energy project in the Canton of Bern.
They will take place in parts of the municipalities of Evilard/Macolin, Bellmund, Bühl bei Aarberg, Hermrigen, Ipsach, Kappelen, Orvin, Plateau de Diesse, Port, Sutz-Lattrigen and Twann-Tüscherz as well as in the cities of Biel and Nidau.
The explored area covers about 30 square kilometers of land and 4 square kilometers of Lake Biel.
Around 2500 measuring devices, the so-called geophones, will be placed throughout the area.
In addition, three vibrating trucks will be used, including a lighter one to carry out the measurements in inhabited areas. The trucks will generate waves at over 3000 measurement points.

Short-term vibrations on site for 30 seconds and within a radius of 50 meters

Measurements will mainly be performed at night on secondary roads, rural roads and forest roads. Only a small part of them will affect inhabited areas.
Three or four vibrations will be produced for each measurement point. A single vibration lasts about 30 seconds and is audible and perceptible within a radius of about 50 meters.
These vibrations will not represent a great burden for people or animals or even for the environment.
As a rule, measurements in built-up areas will be carried out between 20.00 and 22.00.

Wide-ranging communication to ensure transparency for the population

The Federal Office for Construction and Logistics has informed the executive bodies of the affected municipalities at several information events as well as the landowners in writing.
The latter will be contacted personally in the coming months as part of the licensing procedure by the companies commissioned by the FOBL to carry out prospecting.
The inhabitants directly affected have also already been informed, but will receive further information in autumn 2022, shortly before the start of the measurements.

The next steps: from the prospecting of October 2022 to… the heat of 2027

According to the current planning status, prospecting will start in the second half of October 2022.
Once the subsurface exploration is complete, the data will be analyzed and grouped to create an accurate geological model. The results will be available by the summer of 2023.
The template will allow you to define the depth of the drilling. If the Federal Chambers approve the financing of the geothermal project, the works can presumably begin in 2025.
The geothermal plant will start operating in 2027 at the earliest.
