The first hydrogen train in the history of Bavaria is literally taking shape.
On 15 March 2022, the representatives of Siemens Mobility and the Bayerische Regiobahn in fact signed a leasing contract for the innovative "H-propulsion" railway train prototype in the presence of two authoritative members of the Bavarian Government: the Minister of Economy, Hubert Aiwanger, and the Minister of Transport, Christian Bernreiter.
The contract follows the letter of intent already signed by all participants at the second partnership celebration ceremony, which dates back to July 2021.
The two-car hydrogen train of the latest generation was therefore punctually presented to the public in the spring of this year.
The "H-driven" means of transport will be tested in particular on the Augsburg-Füssen route from mid-2023.
The trial trips on the railway network of the BRB, acronym of Bayerische Regiobahn, will have an expected duration of 30 months. The train is expected to officially enter passenger service starting January 2024.

Hubert Aiwanger: “Green hydrogen? A key pillar for climate protection”

Bavarian Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger said: “Green hydrogen is becoming a key pillar for global climate protection in the transport, industry and energy sectors. As Minister of Economics and Energy, I am delighted that our all-Bavarian hydrogen strategy can address more and more concrete issues.”.
And yet: “This train is an important part of a strategy to bring about a real 'transport breakthrough' using hydrogen, which is why we are promoting this project. I am convinced that green hydrogen propulsion systems can significantly reduce polluting emissions in heavy transport and rail and thus contribute to decarbonisation. Even the one-sided dependence on energy supply could be reduced and spread to many regions of the world”.

“Our Mireo Plus H is a 'latest generation' hydrogen train”, according to Albrecht Neumann

Albrecht Neumann, CEO of Siemens Mobility Rolling Stock, commented: “Our Mireo Plus H is a latest generation hydrogen train. It features high driving power, excellent acceleration ability and large operating range. This will make rail travel faster, more efficient, greener and more comfortable."
Furthermore, “Hydrogen traction is an advanced form of emission-free propulsion for trains that decarbonises rail transport and makes a substantial contribution to achieving our climate goals.”

“By 2040 we aim for completely neutral rail transport”, according to Christian Bernreiter

Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter explained: “I am very pleased that we will soon be able to introduce this innovative technology in Bavaria and test it in smooth operation. We are working closely with our partners to get this flagship project off the ground, because we are convinced that hydrogen propulsion can contribute to attractive and even climate-neutral passenger rail transport. Our aim is to achieve this by 2040 at the latest. Bavaria's support for the pilot project, with funding of several million euros, is more than well invested."

“We can't wait to carry out the first tests on our railway lines”, for Arnulf Schuchmann

Arnulf Schuchmann, Managing Director of the Bayerische Regiobahn, said: “Our company sees itself as a reliable mobility partner for the Bavarian citizens and would like to provide them with climate-friendly service day after day. We are also thinking about the future, in fact, and we are happy to contribute today to charting the route for tomorrow's mobility. Despite all the effort associated with the project, we are looking forward to testing our rail network and acquiring the know-how for using hydrogen technology in the railway sector.”
In conclusion, "Together with the Transdev group, of which we are a part, and our entire team on site, the Bayerische Regiobahn will prepare the project in the best possible way to ensure a smooth start of the tests next year."

The hydrogen train was developed on the basis of the Mireo Plus platform from Siemens Mobility. The main component of the hydrogen drive is the roof-mounted fuel cells.
The system also includes the latest generation of batteries, located under the floor of the carriages and supplied by industry specialist SAFT.
The hydrogen-powered vehicle adapts the successful platform of the Mireo regional trains, which is available both in battery-powered versions and with a conventional electric drive.
The development of alternative drives for use in rail transport is part of the global sustainability initiative Siemens Mobility, a pioneer in the field of green mobility.
