In Milan an innovative Volvo mural to... purify the air

In the Portanuova district, a 137 square meter Christmas work used a special paint to neutralize various pollutants

Volvo continues to underline its commitment to the decarbonisation of the Portanuova district of Milan.

Recently, he did so by creating a Christmas mural that used a special paint capable of purifying the surrounding air.

Thanks to the Volvo Studio Milano, the Swedish manufacturer is in fact closely associated with that specific urban area of the Lombardy capital in a partnership in the name of mobility with reduced environmental impact.

There have been many initiatives carried out by the Italian branch of the Gothenburg car manufacturer over the years to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the air quality of the district.

Example of highly sustainable communication alongside the Catella Foundation

The latest one was unusual and innovative, in perfect Volvo style.

A Christmas-themed mural, obviously with an automotive theme, was created in collaboration with an external agency and located at number 22 in via Gaetano De Castillia in Milan, near the Catella Foundation and close to the green space of the Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano , of which Volvo has been a Park Ambassador for five years.

By virtue of the properties of the materials used, the mural constituted an example of highly sustainable communication.

Airlite's semiconductor technology and the same positive impact as 5 trees

A peculiar characteristic of the work was the use of Airlite, a transparent covering paint that allows the surface of the mural to be transformed into a purifier thanks to its semiconductor technology.

The electrical charges that are generated on the surface combine with the water vapor and oxygen present in the air, generating negative ions capable of neutralizing polluting agents such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides or fine dust, once these come into contact with the wall of the mural.

It has been calculated that the use of Airlite paint for the 137 square meter surface of the mural is capable of generating a positive impact on air quality equal to that of 5 trees.

In other words, it can be quantified in the compensation of the emissions produced every day by 22 Euro 6 diesel cars and 29 Euro 6 petrol cars.

During the Christmas period, augmented reality animations and filters through a QRcode

The mural contains a QRcode.

By framing it, users were able to view the digital reproduction of the Christmas environment of the mural with animations of the entire setting until Tuesday 28 November 2023.

From Wednesday 29 November last year, however, the augmented reality filter was active which allowed users to immerse themselves in Volvo's Christmas atmosphere and take selfies wrapped in the context of the Christmas forest with different options available.

This concrete initiative by Volvo, with its effect of improving air quality, goes in the direction of the vocation to Sustainability of COIMA (developer and manager of the neighborhood) and the Milan Portanuova district.

The latter was the first urban redevelopment project in the world to have obtained the prestigious double LEED and WELL for Community recognition from the US Green Building Council and the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).

The two certifications, which evaluate the social, environmental and economic aspects of urban development, have contributed to positioning the Lombardy capital among the most advanced territories.

Chiara Angeli: “A concrete response measurable in tons of CO2 saved”

“I like to talk about the mural capable of cleaning the air that we created in Portanuova because, like what happens at Volvo Studio Milano, it is an unusual and engaging way to raise public awareness on the issues of sustainability and mobility of tomorrow”, he claims Chiara Angeli, Head of Commercial Operations of Volvo Car Italia.

Which adds: “We think that through this work, the fruit of advanced thinking, the Volvo message was able to reach a wide and heterogeneous audience during the holidays. The mural uses cutting-edge technologies, just as Volvo is used to doing, and concretely contributes to the air quality of the neighborhood. It is a fundamental theme for us, as demonstrated by our other projects developed in collaboration with COIMA and which have the decarbonisation of the district as their aim".

And yet: “The electric mobility services we offer constitute a concrete response that can be measured in tons of CO2 saved. On Sustainability, we keep our promises with facts and our unconditional commitment, also in favor of the city of Milan".
