More renewable energy sources in a constant and delicate balance between summer and winter

La Switzerland is facing an energy and climate crisis.
To reach the net-zero target set for 2050 while avoiding an energy deficit, the country depends on renewable energy sources, seasonal storage options and an efficient connection to the European electricity market.
In addition to pumped-storage power plants, batteries and heat storage systems, synthetic fuels and gases such as hydrogen offer particularly interesting opportunities for storing, transporting and trading the cheap electricity produced by photovoltaic plants in the summer for use it later in winter.
Many promising technologiesi are currently under development, but not yet fully operational.
This is where the 'Green Energy and Storage Coalition' came into play, which was presented on 8 June at the Swiss Economic Forum (SEF) of Interlaken, in the Canton of Bern.

Joël Mesot: “Resources to be placed on the market soon in an industrial scale process”

“The purpose of the coalition is to enable existing technologies for carbon capture and zero-carbon gas and fuel production and storage to be brought to market quickly and scale up to industrial scale.”said the President of theETH Joel Mesot, illustrating the plan.

Martin Vetterli: “150 research groups, about 460 scientists and four successful spin-offs”

“Our two universities alone have a huge combined potential: 150 specialized energy research groups, some 460 scientists and four successful spin-offs are active in carbon capture and energy storage. Together with other research groups from the Paul Scherrer Institute and the Federal Laboratory for Materials Science and Technology, the ETH sector has the necessary expertise and scale to collaborate with industrial partners in tackling current challenges.", said the President of theEPFL Martin Vetterli.

AAA Looking for innovative partners from the fields of politics, industry and science

The goal is to build a scalable energy system, climate neutral and flexible within a reasonable time frame.
Achieving it will require a collective effort on the part of the scientific, political and industrial world.
THEETH andEPFL I am now looking for technology partners and implementation, as well as funders and supporters from politics and society.
However, around 20 companies and organizations have already expressed their interest in a collaboration.
These are Alpiq, AMAG, BKW Energie, SBB CFF FFS, Carvolution AG, Cemsuisse, Emil Frey Gruppe, Edelweiss, FIR Group AG, Gaznat, Genève aéroport, GE Vernova, Gruyère Hydrogen Power SA, Implenia, MAN Energy Systems, Migros Industry , Romande Energie, Rolex, Swissmem, SWISS International Air Lines, VBSA, Viteos SA, Verband der Schweizerischen Gasindustrie/Association Suisse de l'Industrie Gazière.
That's not all: the well-known Swiss philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss has already pledged to support the coalition.
In addition to the presidents of the Swiss polytechnic universities, the other two members of the SEF panel, from Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) and the energy service provider Alpiq, represent two heavyweights of the industry Switzerland I'm already on board.

Dieter Vranckx: “Synthetic fuels are the most important lever for aviation”

“We are proud to be part of this energy coalition. We are working together to promote the production of synthetic fuels, which we consider the most important lever for increasingly sustainable air transport in the future", said the CEO of Swiss, Dieter Vrankx.
“At the same time, we are exploring new opportunities for energy storage, which will ultimately improve Switzerland's security of supply and benefit society as a whole”.

Antje Kanngiesser: “We can easily reach our goal of 'net zero'…”

“With a broad coalition of partners from industry, science and society, we can achieve our net-zero goal and secure a sustainable energy supply. This, in turn, contributes to synthetic fuels, which we believe is the most effective tool for air travel.", he says instead Antje Kangiesser, CEO of Alpiq, expressing his company's explicit support for the coalition.

There is one of the pioneers in the production of green hydrogen at its own plant in Gösgen

Swiss airline needs to find quickly economic solutions to achieve their climate goals.
Synthetic fuels play an important role in this respect.
Alpiq, for its part, has a large portfolio of hydroelectric and storage power plants in Switzerland and is one of the pioneers in the production of green hydrogen at its plant in Gösgen in the canton of Solothurn.
With numerous projects for the addition and expansion of renewable energy and of various technologies of storage in Switzerland and neighboring countries, Alpiq is well positioned to make a significant contribution to the coalition.

MegaWatt-scale research platforms operational in 2028 for 100 million francs

The coalition intends to explore technical solutions innovations to create additional opportunities using energy storage facilities to exploit seasonal differences in electricity production in Switzerland and Europe.
This will improve the security of supply of the Switzerland and will diversify energy exchanges with European and international partners, thus creating new business areas and opportunities for technology start-ups and Swiss industry.
The technical options will be systematically analyzed to discover and implement the most effective solutions in terms of security of supply and costs.
The formal coalition-building process will be completed by the end of 2023, enabling the first projects to be launched in early 2024.
The demonstration plants, built on the basis of existing technology but on a MegaWatt scale, will be productive from 2028 and will serve as research platforms.
A budget of around 100 million Swiss francs is needed to finance the first phase of the project.
