Sensations, emotions and cognitions in the Metaverse via the skin

Metaphysiks will connect the nervous system to the digital world using the epidermis and thermo-variant and tactile products based on neuroscience

Through the first product "STiLL", Metaphysiks is able to provide rich bodily tactile sensations that imitate physiological signals and transmit them in an integrated methodology, pushing the user's mind to generate conscious experiences

Metaphysiks, a Lausanne-based immersive technology company, has received $2 million in funding to develop its own neuro-haptic skin, which allows users to bring their sensations, emotions and cognitions into the Metaverse.

After a decade of cutting-edge research in the EPFL laboratories of company co-founder e neuroscientist world famous Olaf Blanke, the start-up presented its core technology, called MetaTouch.

MetaTouch effectively connects the nervous system across the skin's surface using thermo-variant and tactile based products neuroscience, with the ultimate goal of inducing or enriching conscious experiences integrated with the digital environments.

Thanks to its own technology, the Vaudois start-up will help to humanize the Metaverse, bringing physical and emotional involvement in the digital world.

The $2 million funding round will be led by TNF Investments

The $2 million funding round was led by the international investment firm TNF (The New Frontiers) Investments, with the participation of several prominent investors including Logitech, Tej Tadi (founder of the Swiss unicorn Mindmaze) and All Here SA.

Samir Khosla, a venture partner of TNF, who has been working closely with the founders since 2021, has been appointed to the Metaphysiks Board of Directors.

Through the first product “STiLL”, Metaphysiks is able to provide rich bodily tactile sensations that imitate physiological signals and transmit them in an integrated methodology, prompting the user's mind to generate conscious experiences.

Positively transforming lives with cutting-edge immersive technologies

The founder of TNF Investments, Erkin Beck, commented: “We are delighted to support Metaphysiks' launch of its cutting-edge immersive technology, which will enhance digital environments with rich new tactile experiences, deeply rooted in neuroscience. Metaphysiks is poised to positively transform human lives and institutions by merging the physical and digital worlds”.

The pioneering team behind Metaphysiks comprises several industry experts with decades of experience in robotics, neuroscience and haptic technology from the Federal Polytechnic University of Lausanne and from Biotech Campus of Geneva.

The faith of Samir Khosla, Simon Gallo and Giulio Rognini in haptic perception

The term "haptic" was coined by the psychologist Max Dessoir, in 1892, to describe the sensory experiences connected to the concept of "touch"; in 1968 James Jerome Gibson defined the "haptic system" as “the individual's sensitivity to the world around his body, mediated by subjective bodily experience”, emphasizing the close interaction between body movements and haptic perception, emphasizing how the latter should be considered a form of active spatial exploration, i.e. a form of “extended physiological proprioception” of the environment, directly proportional to the forces involved in the contact.

Samir Khosla, Venture Partner of TNF, he added: “We look forward to supporting the team and the company in commercializing their intellectual property in industries that need the best experiences. To name a few: healthcare, esports, life sciences, digital workplaces and entertainment”.

Simon Gallo, PhD, co-founder and chief technology officer of Metaphysiks, said: “Rich haptic feedback is the key to truly feeling the Metaverse. The goal is to integrate our neuro-haptic skin into objects of our daily life, such as chairs or keyboards, thus transforming them into access points to unique digital experiences".

Julius Rognini, PhD, co-founder and head of partnerships of Metaphysiks, he added: “This funding round validates the vast potential of the Metaphysiks platform and supports our vision of connecting digital worlds with our bodies to make the digital realm feel real.”
