On July 21, 2022, the Federal Mint of Switzerland will launch the new silver coin "Solar power", the second of the series of three coins concerning the theme of "energy of the future".

In addition to hydroelectricity, solar energy and wind energy are the main pillars of renewable energy in Switzerland, even if exploited to a lesser extent than the former.

The use of inexhaustible renewable energies should help reduce dependence on oil and gas as well as on nuclear technology and, in the long term, try to phase out energy needs of fossil origin.

At the centre, the issues relating to climate change and renewable energy sources

With the “Energy of the future” series, swissmint wants to emphasize the importance of issues concerning climate change and renewable energies. “Solar Power” follows on from the three-coin series that began in 2021.

The obverse of the silver 20-franc coin "Solar power" is divided into two sections.

On the upper half, a colored abstract figure is depicted in which the sun with its rays can be recognized.

On the lower half, however, various technical elements relating to the actual production of energy from the sun are depicted (including some details on the functioning of a solar cell, technical drawings of the components, data on solar energy in Switzerland).

Along the bottom edge are stamped the words “SONNE” and “ENERGIE” in capital letters, followed by the corresponding terms in French (“soleil”) and Italian (“sole”).

In the design of Benjamin Löbbert and Remo Mascherini sections that light up in the dark

As in last year's “Hydroelectricity” special coin, the fluorescent elements glow in the dark. The drawing was made by Benjamin Löbbert, engraver of swissmint.

The reverse was reworked by Remo Mascherini, engraver of swissmint. The intent is to take up the theme represented by the coin, creating a link with the obverse.

On the upper edge of the reverse, clockwise, the words “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA”, the year of minting “2022”, the mintmark “B” referring to Bern and the coin value “20 FR.” can be read. In the center is a technical drawing of the sun with solar cells.

The new coin face, with text on the edge and image in the middle, can be used for all special coins.

In 2023, the special coin “Wind Energy” will close the series dedicated to the future

The silver coin "Solar power", available only in the “proof” quality and sold in a case with a numbered certificate of authenticity, is part of the series of three “Energy of the Future” coins. In 2023, the special coin “Wind Energy” will close the series.

The new special coin of swissmint will be available from 21 July 2022 in a limited edition at www.swissmintshop.ch as well as in some numismatic shops and some banks.
