XZERO, a self-sufficient smart city is born in Kuwait

A car-free, sustainable, "autarkic" city will be built in the Emirate north of the Gulf, which also aims to guarantee food security

Net zero: chimera or reality? If until a few years ago living with zero emissions seemed utopian and futuristic, today many architects and urban planners are working on projects which, at least on paper, fully achieve the goal of climate neutrality.
One of the most recent is the one proposed by the URB studio, which has recently presented XZERO, a new model of smart city that will see the light in the southern part of Kuwait.
URB's mission, clearly published on their website, speaks for itself: “Population growth, urbanization and climate change require the creation of resilient, livable and intelligent cities. The construction of sustainable cities is no longer a choice, but a necessity".

XZERO, resilient and sustainable urban agglomeration

Un innovative and resilient housing model which focuses on renewable energies, passive houses and intelligent roads. XZERO it will be built on an area of ​​no less than 1600 hectares and will welcome around 100 inhabitants.
The common denominator of the project is sustainability, achieved through a urban model fully integrated into nature, where citizens will be able to live with zero impact. Sustainability, in this case, rhymes with planning, necessary to anticipate needs and requirements and achieve the proposed objectives without excessively impacting the proposal from an economic point of view.
The aim of the entire project, in fact, is to incorporate i three different pillars of sustainability, i.e. the environmental, social and finally the economic aspect.

Here a landscape that promotes health and biodiversity

From the planning phase to the realization one, the sustainability of XZERO is accomplished through promotion of well-being and health of its citizens, who will live in a city that aims to increase biodiversity of nature, fully integrated within the urban model. Fundamental to achieving the aforementioned objectives was the design of the shape of the city itself, as well as its population density.
The latter, in fact, has been optimized to maximize green spaces, so as to mitigate the increase in temperatures and counteract the effect of heat islands, now sadly known even in our latitudes.
The words of Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, explain the concept better: “It will be the landscape that will be the social glue of the entire city, which will promote a lively urban fabric in which every resident will be able to reach any type of service offered in just a few minutes. Furthermore, the landscape will be integrated with the wadis, so as to improve the resilience and livability of the city, while promoting the variation of habitats and wildlife life. The landscape is also productive and incorporates different methods of urban agriculture such as community gardens, bio domes, aquaponics, vertical farms and bio-saline agriculture".

A productive city that aims at food security

One of the most revolutionary concepts contained in the project of XZERO is definitely related to the idea of productive city: the aforementioned urban gardens, together with vertical farms and aquaponic crops will be source of nourishment for all citizensas well as an educational tool for adults and children.
In this context, the biggest novelty, unique of its kind, is represented by scalable farms, known by the name of FEW+W Nexus farms: these will produce food, energy, water and waste in an integrated and connected way.
Waste does not exist: the saline water discarded by desalination activities, for example, will be used to raise fish and halophytic plants such as quinoa. Sustainability will therefore also be food, so as to guarantee its safety.

A city without a car: intelligent road systems on a human scale

We said it just now: ZXERO will be a city in which it will be easy for residents to reach every service. In fact, the viability translates into the creation of ecological transport systems in which cycle paths, pedestrian paths and greenways will be predominant.
This smart city will be practically a city without car, because vehicular traffic, with limited access, will only be allowed on a ring road.
We are facing a real one walking city which takes the best from what sustainability and innovation have taught us up to now to respond to the need to ensure high living standards, but not for this in contrast with nature.
