The lunar year kicked off Lamborghini's NFT project
The Emilian factory, NFT PRO and RM Sotheby's have received offers for the five pairs of physical and digital artworks by Fabian Oefner
With the beginning of February came the first day of the Lunar New Year and with it the opening of the auction for the first project NFT di Lamborghini called "Space Time Memory".
For the occasion, the artist Fabian Oefner shared new details on the intimate meaning of the work created in the name and on behalf of House of Sant'Agata Bolognese: "I'm a child of the space age, so I grew up with images of the Shuttle launching in the middle of the night."
The Swiss Fabian Oefner "digital" artist of Lamborghini
The Swiss artist: “It is not the mere decomposition of a car….”
“For me, this work is not just about a car, it's also about memories. This project is not the mere decomposition of a car, it also concerns the Space Key, a carbon fiber key that connects two worlds: the digital world and the physical one. That's what excites me."
And yet: “So when I thought about where to start, how to create an incredible work and show it in a way never seen before, I came up with the idea of a car rocketed into the sky. It is a metaphysical work, because Ultimae in Latin means 'last', but also 'farthest'. The Moon is the farthest place man has traveled. This is why the car points towards the moon, because it is the place that stimulates our imagination. We are all explorers and love to discover new worlds”.
Lamborghini's advance towards NFTs winks at the Moon

75 hours and 50 minutes for each rod like Apollo 11 to… orbit
Each auction had an expected duration of 75 hours and minutes 50, i.e. the same time taken byApollo 11 to take off and enter lunar orbit, and this is not the only reference to man's exploration of space.
The physical work of art, the SpaceKey, contains elements of carbon fiber which Lamborghini sent on International Space Station in 2020, within the framework of a joint research programme.
These carbon fiber elements, on which a unique QR code, refer to the digital component: a series of five photographs of one Lamborghini Ultimate heading towards the stars
The images depict the car lifting off the ground at five different times, within seconds of each other.
The components, engine, transmission, suspension and hundreds of nuts and bolts shoot off the car's chassis like the combustion flame of a rocket.
Over 1500 individual components of an authentic “Lambo” Ultimae
It may look like a computer generated image, but it is aartwork created entirely with real-world elements: the artist represented over 1500 individual components of an authentic car.
The photography of the curvature of the earth was accomplished by sending a balloon equipped with a camera to the edge of the stratosphere. The artist then carefully assembled all these images to depict an artificial instant.
Each of the five NFT contains over 600 million pixels. By enlarging the images it is possible to observe the hidden details of these photographs hyper-realistic.
The resolution is such that you can see the small marks on the engine firing sequence V12 or admire the different millings on the transmission sprockets. The more you look at the composition, the more secrets emerge…
“Space Time Memory” as an analogy of memories of a lifetime
The artist Fabian Oefner, speaking about the idea behind its creation, explained: “For me, 'Space Time Memory' is an analogy of the memories we create throughout life. Memories originate in the physical world, they are born in reality, but are then stored in our brain, which we could compare to the digital world. I often wonder what is more important to me: the real moment or the memory of the moment?”.
It's not all: “Similarly, given the growing number of digital realities around us, I wonder which is more important: reality itself or its copies and derivatives that exist in the digital universe?”.
At the beginning of the project, Fabian Oefner meticulously studied the technical projects of the Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae, creating an accurate sketch of the final photograph.
Based on the sketch, Lamborghini has prepared all the necessary parts and components for one Ultimaea ready for production.
Fabian and his team then photographed elements of the special Fan, simulating a photo studio next to the production line of the factory Sant'Agata Bolognese.
Upon returning to his studio in the United States, near New York, where he lives and works, the artist has combined the numerous images into the composition imagined in the sketch.
Decarbonisation is Lamborghini's new polar star
More than two months for an instant shorter than the blink of an eye
It took the Swiss artist and his team over two months to create an instant shorter than even the blink of an eye.
