Human and natural sciences increasingly hand in hand. The City of Lugano and the IBSA Foundation for Scientific Research have officially signed the agreement which brings the activities promoted by the foundation linked to the important pharmaceutical company into Casa Carlo Cattaneo.
A historical place full of meanings for Ticino, named after the famous Milanese patriot, philosopher, politician, political scientist, linguist and writer, will thus become a research laboratory in the synthesis between scientific and humanistic disciplines, whose opening to the public is expected within summer 2023.

Scientific and humanistic disciplines: the mission to combine them as much as possible

On the tenth anniversary of the start of its activity, the IBSA Foundation will move its headquarters to Casa Carlo Cattaneo to carry out activities related to the dissemination of scientific thinking and the relationship between the arts and sciences, collaborating with the major cultural and educational institutions in the area, and not only.
What is obvious: supporting young researchers, disseminating scientific topics with the simplest and most captivating language possible, while maintaining a rigorous and controlled basis; reconciling different languages, using, for example, comics to describe biomedical research; propose cultural and artistic activities as concrete tools to improve people's health and well-being.

These are the topics on which the IBSA Foundation for Scientific Research has placed its attention since it was created in 2012 and in its ten years of activity, during which it has entered into agreements with some of the most important Ticino institutions, such as the University of Italian Switzerland, the Culture Division of the City of Lugano, MASI and LAC.
Outside the Canton, the Foundation has activated collaborations with institutions such as the National Museum of Science and Technology "Leonardo da Vinci" in Milan, and with the Science Museum of Trento, developing at the same time a very extensive network of contacts also with other cultural operators in Switzerland and in the rest of Europe.

Arturo Licenziati: “We will receive new inspiration from the house we will move to”

“Those who have achieved a lot in life must give back a part of what they have received to the people and the world around them. It is precisely on this philosophy that, ten years ago, I decided to start the IBSA Foundation for Scientific Research, in order to support young researchers, but also to disseminate ideas and explore new connections between science and the human arts", said Arturo Licenziati, President and CEO of the IBSA Group.
“I am sure that we will receive new inspiration from the historic place full of meanings to which we will move our headquarters, where we will be able to develop our projects dedicated to the public and the territory in which we operate even better”.

Particular attention will be paid to internal Switzerland and the German language

Particular attention is paid to internal Switzerland.
The opening towards the German-speaking world, considered strategic by the Foundation, will expand in the coming months with further initiatives, also aimed at making known the research activity that is born in the Canton, but which is still little covered by the media, and therefore little known outside Ticino.
Over the years, the activity of the IBSA Foundation has expanded steadily, becoming a point of reference in the Ticino cultural landscape and supporting many initiatives, starting with the USI Master's in Medicine, offering a contribution to students to support university fees.
Casa Cattaneo will permanently host some initiatives and exhibitions, including an in-depth study dedicated to the great philosopher-political-theoretician of federalism and proponent of the synthesis between technical and humanistic thought.
The building will host events open to the public organized as part of the “Let's Science”, “SciArt”, “Forum Scientifici” projects, as well as the headquarters of the competence center in “Culture and Health”.
