Hellenikon Metropolitan Park is an urban development project under construction on the site of the former Athens international airport of the same name.

The area, intended to revitalize the capital of Greece, will include luxury homes, hotels, casinos, a marina, shops and offices and will have the tallest buildings in the entire Mediterranean nation.

Construction of the infrastructure was scheduled to begin in 2008 and be completed in 2013, however the plans are shelved in the midst of the financial crisis that has affected the Southern European country and the entire world.

General construction began on The Ellinikon in July 2020, which is expected to be completed in 2024, while the Riviera Tower and Hard Rock Hotel Casino are expected to be completed by 2026.

The entire surface area should cover 263 hectares, while another 100 hectares will be dedicated to homes and offices.

It will be one of the largest urban gardens in Europe, surpassing London's Hyde Park (250 hectares), but not only that.

The Riviera Tower and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will be the tallest buildings on the site and will reach 200 meters in height, achieving a record for the entire south-eastern Europe.

It was in 2013 that a first hypothesis of the initiative was presented: the team included the studios Foster & Partners, Charles Anderson Landscape Architecture, ARUP and a large group of Greek design consultants.

However, the project was revised and resubmitted to the Greek government in 2018 and construction work began in July 2020. The Ellinikon.

In 2021, global design firm Sasaki is tasked with redesigning the park and submitting the revised design for permitting and actual construction.

Demolition of the existing site of the former Athens airport began in April 2023, while construction of Phase 1 of the Park is expected to be completed within the next three years.
