On October 19, 2022, the United States of America and the Swiss Confederation signed a joint declaration on cooperation in the field of quantum information science and technology (the so-called "QIST", whose acronym means " Quantum Information Science and Technology").
The declaration builds on shared democratic values and the intense bottom-up collaborations already underway in this field between researchers from the two countries.
Diplomatic relations between Washington and Bern began in 1853, five years after the birth of the Swiss federal state.
Since then, several agreements have consolidated relations between the two countries, such as a science and technology agreement signed in 2009.
Recently, the heads of quantum research strategies of the two countries gathered around a round table of twelve nations to coordinate research on quantum information.
The joint statement reflects both states' willingness to cooperate in the QIST area, to promote research integrity, to create a respectful and inclusive scientific research community, and to build a reliable market and supply chain on both sides. across the Atlantic.

The “Swiss-US Quantum Days” in Chicago culminate a common path

QIST has the potential to revolutionize many fields of science and technology thanks to quantum computers that clearly surpass traditional ones in several areas, to special networks for the transmission and distribution of quantum information and to ultra-sensitive sensors.
The United States has been investing in this technology since the early 2018s and launched the National Quantum Initiative in 13, which led to the creation of XNUMX QIST centers at universities, national laboratories and government laboratories where research and development.
The initiative also spawned an industry-led quantum consortium, the National Q-12 Education Partnership, to develop the workforce of tomorrow, as well as a QIST expert committee to advise the President and Congress of the United States.
In Switzerland, investment in QIST spans a period of more than twenty years, with the launch of the National Research Pole (PRN) on Nanotechnology, the PNR on Quantum Photonics in 2001, the PNR on Quantum Science and Technology in 2010 and the PNR on silicon spin qubits in 2020.
In May 2022, the federal government also launched a national initiative on quantum research, complementing the significant investments already made by Swiss universities and research institutions.
In the margin of the signing of the joint declaration, swissnex is co-organizing the first edition of the “Swiss-US Quantum Days” meeting in Chicago.

Convergence on QIST in the words of Charles Tahan and Jacques Pitteloud

According to Charles Tahan, Deputy Director for Quantum Information Science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Director of the National Office of Quantum Coordination “Today's declaration of quantum cooperation recognizes the importance of US-Swiss collaborations in accelerating QIST research and development and is an important step in developing a global network of trust for this critically important emerging technology that advances computing, networks and sensing for the benefit of society”.
Jacques Pitteloud, Swiss Ambassador to the United States, said: “With the signing of a joint declaration on quantum cooperation, the strong scientific ties between Switzerland and the USA are taking on a new dimension. It is the expression of the will of both countries to face the key challenges of this century and to seize the promising opportunities offered by the QIST”.
