50 new and revised professions, adapted to the Swiss economy

In Switzerland, vocational training offers are reviewed regularly and, if necessary, promptly modified.

In 2023 State Secretariat for Training, Research and Innovation it issued and approved a total of 50 professions, both new and revised: 23 in basic professional training and 27 in higher professional training.

In relation to the topic of sustainability and ecology, for example, the professions of "AFC solar system installer", "CFP solar system installer" and "building envelope designer with federal diploma" were created.

In Switzerland, training contents are defined by the organizations in the world of work, responsible for individual professions.

The need to embrace developments and themes such as sustainability and ecology is evident

The creation of new professions occurs above all to meet developments and themes such as sustainability and ecology, as well as to satisfy the economic world's related need for qualified personnel.

From the 2024 school year, apprentices in the new profession of AFC solar system installer will, for example, assemble, install, maintain and repair solar systems on flat roofs, pitched roofs, or on facades.

In this way they transform building envelopes into energy production systems and comply with energy efficiency and climate protection requirements.

At the tertiary level, future building envelope designers will be the professionals specializing in the creation of complete building envelopes or parts thereof during new constructions or renovations.

To ensure the quality of the building envelope, they particularly clarify the requirements regarding connections between building parts.

They recognize critical success factors and develop appropriate solutions and at the same time take sustainability criteria into account.

Every five years all basic professional training under the lens of the individual Cantons

The Confederation, in particular the SERI, is responsible for issuing the ordinances on basic vocational training, for approving the regulations of professional examinations (EP), higher professional examinations (EPS) and the framework teaching programs of specialized schools higher education courses (SSS), as well as the recognition of SSS training cycles and post-diploma studies.

While in basic vocational training the implementation and execution are the responsibility of the cantons, in higher vocational training these tasks fall to the organizations of the world of work and the specialized higher schools.

In this context, at least every five years all basic vocational training is subjected to a review in light of new economic, technological, ecological and educational developments and, if necessary, is modified.

The higher vocational training courses and qualifications are also regularly reviewed and adapted to new developments.
