New automotive testing center in Gothenburg
Volvo Cars, Vectura Fastigheter and Next Step Group together in a new mobility innovation center dedicated to emerging technologies
Gothenburg, the main city in the Kingdom of Sweden after the capital Stockholm and the fifth largest city in Northern Europe in terms of population with half a million inhabitants, will equip itself with a new and important automotive testing centre.
The Mobility Innovation Destination Torslanda centre, soon to be built, is in fact to be considered a specific center for research activities for automotive development, located near the heart of the operational activities of the manufacturer Volvo.
This initiative is part of the process of electrification and evolution of the next generation of high-end electric cars from the Swedish company, as well as representing a renewed commitment towards the city that has hosted it since the origins of the brand as well as for almost a hundred years. years.

The objective is an environment designed to simulate the technologies of a future society
The innovation center will in fact allow Volvo Cars to test emerging technologies in an environment designed to simulate the scenario of a future society, which the Scandinavian company imagines its cars could be part of.
Rather than developing technologies such as wireless car charging, bi-directional charging between the grid and an electric car (vehicle-to-grid) and autonomous driving functions only in laboratories and dedicated centres, the project will allow innovations to be tested, validated and introduced in a context similar to the urban one.
In addition to the construction of much-needed new buildings and facilities for testing, engineering studies and materials development, the promoter of the Scandinavian technopole plans to expand the Volvo Cars campus in Torslanda, near Gothenburg, to accommodate start-up companies and business partners .

The Mobility Innovation Destination Torslanda inserted into a broader ecosystem
The Mobility Innovation Destination Torslanda will join Volvo's growing list of physical locations around the world, which includes the software testing center that recently opened in Gothenburg and several technopoles.
It has tech hubs in Sweden (Stockholm and Lund), Poland (Krakow), India (Bangalore) and Singapore, plus engineering centers in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Shanghai, China.
While each of these brand locations is focused on its own objective, together they represent an important network of strategically located innovation centers.

25.000 m15 hybrid wooden building, carbon footprint reduced by XNUMX percent
The next phase of the project to create the new Mobility Innovation Destination Torslanda center consists of the construction of the buildings that will house modern offices directly opposite the current campus.
Construction will take place through a cost-effective collaboration between Volvo Cars and real estate development companies Vehicle Fastigheter e Next Step Group.
These expansion works will also be fundamental to achieving the ambitious objectives that the Volvo group pursues, namely to become a car manufacturer with an all-electric range by 2030 and an industry leader in new technologies and sustainable mobility.
The sustainability objectives of the project are also ambitious.
The first new work is a 25.000 square meter hybrid wooden construction reserved for exclusive use by Volvo Cars and capable of reducing the carbon footprint by 15 percent compared to a traditional steel and concrete structure.
Work is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2024 and the first building is expected to be finished by 2026, in time for Volvo Cars' 2027th anniversary celebrations in XNUMX.
Current plans also include the inclusion of the existing campus in an expansion of the Gothenburg Green City Zone initiative.

In the metropolis the goal is transport without polluting emissions by 2030
This is an area in which the Municipality of Gothenburg, together with Volvo Cars and other companies, researchers and other entities, can experiment with new technologies for both vehicles and infrastructure, with a view to achieving emission-free transport pollutants by 2030.
Through this initiative, the supporters also intend to improve the connection with other mobility innovation hubs in the city and further enhance the engineering capabilities of the Volvo campus in Gothenburg.
In addition to the recent opening of a software testing center, the area boasts a strong engineering presence that includes a manufacturing plant, a design center and testing and development facilities, including a pilot plant, a batteries, wind tunnels and a safety center with crash test laboratories.
A new battery production plant is also currently under construction by Novo, the Swedish car brand's joint venture with Northvolt.
In 2022, Volvo Cars also announced a SEK 10 billion investment in its Torslanda plant to produce next-generation fully electric cars.
Inside, among other things, mega casting technology for the die-casting of aluminum body parts, a new battery assembly plant and completely renovated painting and final assembly plants will be introduced.
